During this 19 day transit of the Northwest Passage, we sail from Russia to the Canadian Arctic. We’ll explore the Chukotka Peninsula, in Russia’s far east, and meet its people which are comprised of two groups: semi nomadic hunters and coast-dwelling fishermen. Sailing across the Beaufort Sea, named for the British rear admiral Sir Francis Beaufort, we reach the Canadian Arctic. Visit Pauline Cove, a winter refuge for ships from the 19th century. In Franklin Bay we’ll watch for bowhead whales and polar bears. Along Victoria Strait, Sir John Franklin’s name will be heard time and again, for it was here that in 1859 his search for the Northwest Passage came to a tragic end. The shipboard experts will relate every detail of the thrilling history that surrounds every nautical mile. We journey aboard the Kaptain Khlebnikov, a polar class icebreaker, combining power and technology with creature comforts. Originally designed for the rigors of northern Siberia, the Kapitan Khlebnikov is one of a few vessels of its kind in the world. |
