As you pour over a map of Antarctica, the names that you see are a virtual shorthand for dozens of stories about the exploration of the continent. Become part of that legacy by joining our search for the far south. One name in particular will take on a special significance — the Bay of Whales, the closest area to the South Pole accessible by ship.
Visit the old base camps in McMurdo Sound left by the expeditions of Borchgrevink, Scott and Shackleton, and learn about their harrowing struggles in the region. Travel to Cape Adare, home to over a quarter of a million Adélie penguins and explore Macquarie Island, home to the majority of the world’s population of royal penguins.
Joining this epic expedition is Adrian Raeside, an author, editorial cartoonist and grandson of Sir Charles Wright, who was a member of the Scott expedition aboard the Terra Nova (1910 – 1913). Adrian is writing a book about his grandfather and the tragic Scott expedition, to be published by the fall of 2009. As the guest lecturer, Adrian will share expedition photos, memoirs and letters including stories from his grandfather. |
