Imagine a desert of white, fine sand filled with lagoons of blue and crystalline waters, where the temperature is agreeable all year round…This paradise does exist and it is located in the Brazilian Northeast in an area called Lencois Maranhenses. The only desert in the world with thousands of small lakes, this area is unique. Climb dunes tens of meters high and view the crystal clear fresh water lakes that vary in colour from clear green to dark blue, take a boat trip on the Preguicas River, climb a lighthouse for a 360 degree view, visit local Indian fishing villages and explore the restored colonial city of San Luis. Founded by the French, occupied by the Dutch, influenced by the Portuguese, Sao Luis has some of the oldest Brazil buildings in Brazil and is recognized by UNESCO as a jewel of colonial architecture. A perfect compliment to our Brazilian Explorer tour itinerary.
