This is a voyage into the bays and islands of the Canadian Eastern High Arctic and Northwest Greenland. Throughout the voyage we will be taking the ship into new areas and discovering new ground- with plentiful wildlife for company! Explore Wellington Channel and then head north until meeting the barrier of the winter pack ice at around 79 degrees.
On Port Leopold Island, the wintering spot of James Clark Ross on his 1848 expedition in search of Franklin, we will explore the overpowering limestone cliffs and well-known wildlife of the Island. Then we cross over to Devon Island and continue east through Lancaster sound. In Jones Sound, we stop at Coburg Island National Wildlife Area to view the magnificent seabird cliffs. There will be an attempt to visit Grise Fjord on Ellesmere Island, Canada’s northernmost community, to learn about Inuit survival in the unforgiving Arctic environment.
Sailing east across the top of Baffin Bay close to Greenland, we hope to visit one of the northernmost municipalities in the world at Qaanaaq. We round Kap York, with its incredible nesting sites of Little Auks, en route towards Baffin Bay. On our return, look for the ice sheet in the middle of the bay, where we may see polar bears, seals and narwhal. From Pond Inlet on Baffin Island, travel westward towards Resolute, stopping at Cape Hay Migratory Bird Sanctuary for a look at the cliffs teeming with bird life. We return to Devon Island to have a closer look. Our last stop will be Beechey Island to learn about Sir John Franklin’s fatal attempt to find the Northwest Passage.
We’ll wind up our voyage at Resolute. We will board our group flight and overnight in Ottawa. |
