Easter Island - Extension

Day 1: Arrive in Hanga Roa

You are met upon your arrival at Mataveri airport, Easter Island and transferred to your accommodations in Hanga Roa.

Day 2: Hanga Roa, Moai Sites, Rano Kau Volcano

Today, start the day with a tour of the town of Hanga Roa, the principal community on the island. Heading out of town, visit the ancient highlights of Ahu Akivi and the red scoria quarry of Puna Pau, where the top knots for the Moai were quarried and sculpted.

In the afternoon, drive up the sides of the extinct volcano of Rano Kau to peer down into its crater that is partly filled with water. From here, view the rugged volcanic coast as it is pounded by the Pacific surf.

Wander among the ancient buildings in the former ceremonial village of Orongo, one of the principal sites of the “Birdman Cult”. On the coast, enter the ceremonial cave of Ana Kai Tangata and walk among the Ahu of Vinapu. (B, L)

Day 3: Ahu Ruins, Rano Raraku Volcano

Today, journey to the other end of the island visiting the Ahu ruins of Akahanga, Tongariki and Te Pito Kura. You have the opportunity to hike up the other major volcano of Rano Raraku (extinct) for fantastic views of the island, the coast and the Moai quarry. This is a magical place, where the wonders and mysteries of Easter Island's ancient culture spread out before you. To complete the day, spend some time in the surf at the sandy beach of Anakena. Day 4: Sebastian Englert Museum, Handicraft Market

Travel to the sculptures at Ahus Tahai and then visit the Sebastian Englert Museum and the handicraft market nearby. The afternoon is free at leisure. (B)

Day 5: Return flight to Santiago

Transfer to Mataveri airport for your return flight to Santiago. At Santiago airport, depending on flight schedules, you may connect with international flights homeward. (B)
