Day 1: Quito, to La Selva Jungle LodgeA 45 minute scheduled flight takes you from Quito to Coca where you are met by La Selva staff for the trip to the Lodge.
Baggage Allowance is 33lbs/15kgs per person plus a small backpack carry on. However, arrangements may be made to leave excess baggage in Quito.
From Coca airport you have a short trip through town to the river's edge where you board a comfortable motorboat launch. Keep your camera handy for this diverse journey, a marvelous introduction to the jungle habitat. Enjoy the two-hour trip past the Napo River landscape of native huts and deepening jungle vegetation.
A 20-minute walk on a boardwalk connects you to Garzacocha Lake — the “Heron Lake” where you board canoes for the final quarter mile paddle to the Lodge perched on a hill overlooking the Lake. Days 2 - 4: Activities at La Selva Jungle Lodge and ReserveEnjoy what the lodge and the area have to offer. Here is a partial list of activities that you can experience along with your naturalist guides and native assistants:
Walks through the rainforest or along the Napo riverside range from easy groomed trails to underdeveloped requiring some physical challenge, passing the huts of our indigenous neighbors or filled with wildlife. Kayaking and swimming are available on Garzacocha Lake. There is even a raft to relax on. There are several lakes and lookouts where you can see parrots, parakeets, an enormous colony of leafcutter ants and perhaps even a jaguar. You can enjoy a picnic lunch and even try eating lemon ants!
La Selva has a 135-foot Observation Tower; its bird's-eye view of the jungle is excellent for birding enthusiasts. The Native assistants speak minimal English, but know the names of all the birds, and more importantly, how to find them.
Unique to La Selva is their Butterfly Farm. Here you can watch and photograph butterflies at very close range. Day 5: La Selva, to QuitoAfter breakfast you start your journey back to Quito via canoe, motorboat to Coca and flight.
We arrive back into Quito around 12:00 Noon. Please give 5 hrs minimum to connect to international flight in case of any delays, however we recommend you overnight in Quito. |
